In this article, we give you tips and recommendations to keep in mind when choosing a good company to rent a motorhome, whether in Mallorca or anywhere in the world.
1. Vehicle Selection
This usually depends on the number of people traveling and the type of route. Generally speaking, the rule is as follows:
– Single person or couples. If you’re looking for mobility, a campervan; if you prioritize comfort, a low-profile motorhome.
– Two couples. Overcab motorhome with two double beds.
– Couple with one child. Low-profile or overcab motorhome.
– Couples with more than one child or groups of 5 or more people. Overcab motorhome with bunk beds.
2. Documentation
Make sure you are renting from a company that has all the vehicle’s documentation in order. It is very important that the insurance is for rental fleets and not personal insurance, as you could be left completely unprotected in the event of an accident.
– The vehicle’s registration document must state that it is for “self-drive rental” use; it cannot be a vehicle for “personal use.”
– Request a copy of the rental agreement before starting your trip.
– If you are leaving Spain, request the vehicle registration document (green card).
3. Choosing a Rental Company
Here are several key points to consider before making your reservation.
– Select companies with excellent Google ratings and a minimum number of reviews.
– Carefully review the equipment included in the rental. If the vehicle isn’t fully equipped, be aware of the potential additional costs. Some companies charge extra for everything: bed linens, booster seats/chairs, towels, kitchenware, outdoor tables and chairs, toilet tablets… Can you imagine going to a hotel and having to pay extra for towels or bed linens?
– Ensure there is flexibility with vehicle pick-up and drop-off times.
– If you’re arriving at your vacation destination by plane, it’s crucial that the rental company is located as close as possible to the airport and offers a transfer service.
– Ask about their fuel policies; full/full is always the best option.
– Check if the mileage is unlimited or not.
– Make sure that in case of any incident, question, or query during your stay, you have a clear means of communication with the company to get a solution as quickly as possible.
– A local company can advise you and help you with aspects that may be of interest to you, such as restaurants, beaches, natural parks, places to visit with children, etc. But remember, you are renting a motorhome; they are not expected to organize your trip.
– Check what type of insurance is included in the price and what the deposit is when you pick up the vehicle. Some companies offer a discount on the deposit for an extra fee.
– If you have any questions or queries, call the company directly and ask without hesitation.
– If the conditions and services are the same, compare prices.
4. Before the trip / Pick-up day
– Plan your route carefully. Thanks to apps like Park4Night or Caramaps, you can see all the service points, parking areas, and campsites for motorhomes and campervans.
– When picking up the vehicle, ask for a thorough explanation of how all the features work. Some companies have user manuals and even YouTube channels with lots of information.
– Inspect the vehicle with the company staff and note any damage or defects.
– Keep a copy of the contract and display it on the vehicle’s windshield.
– Confirm what kind of roadside assistance they offer and if they have a 24-hour emergency contact number.
